Drop The Lime - Hot As Hell

This guys amazes me more and more.......
Rockabilly and Dance Music. At first glance, not a likely pairing. And yet both have roots in the seedy club underbelly, and both were born of late night rebellion, youth culture and the rhythmic pounding of the bass.

And no-one can meld them quite like New York native Luca Venezia, aka Drop The Lime. Brought up on a staple diet of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Richie Valens, he learned to play guitar and sing from a young age, and like every kid, he wanted to be a rock star. Fast-forward a few years and a love affair with club music – specifically the UK-centric sounds of drum’n’bass, jungle and 2-step garage – began, solidified by a short move to Berlin and an immersion in house, techno and the never-ending warehouse parties the city is famed for.

With fellow DJ/producers Star Eyes, The Captain and AC Slater he started putting on his own Trouble & Bass club nights, renowned for being rowdy raves full of raw energy and heavy bass. But Luca never lost his love for the sounds he grew up with; as a DJ who nearly always mixes Rockabilly into his sets and describes his own sound as ‘Rockabilly gone bass-wild’, it was only right that he should bring it all together in his first UK release ‘Hot As Hell’, which sees him singing over an endless harmonica loop and one of the killer breakdowns he’s famous for. Live @ Club Sway Nov. 12 2010 by DJTwoShoes

For all of you that don't know Mr. Timmy 2 Shoes is quickly honing his chops in San Diego playing music that he likes to call "groovy." Dance floors are starting to understand the signature sound of a man just trying to keep his shoes on his feet. Take a listen to this live recording from club SWAY in San Diego from just a week ago. He will be warming things up this friday at Firehouse starting at 8:45.

Chromeo - Hot Mess (ft. Elly Jackson) (La Roux Remix) by BoomBoomChik

Collaborations tend to rub me the wrong way but this being one exception. Eli Jacksons vocals over Chromeo's funky bass lines make for a POP like song that will surely grace dance floors worldwide.

Yo David Chase! You P.O.V. Shot Me In The Head (feat. Diplo) by The Death Set

XXXChange Production+ Death Set Guitar riffs + Diplo influence gives you one wacked out combination of all music types under the sun. Maybe I'm partial to the creations of XXXChange. Maybe I like the Death Set because they claim Baltimore as home. Or maybe it's how I enjoy tracks that I would normally find exhausting when Diplo drops them at one of his shows. This is a combination that all parties exemplify in one short little song. I find this to be quite the party jam!!

Really Chris Brown? Making Ike and Tina References?

New Chris Brown Lyrics

Chris Brown! How did this happen? You do realize that you are, to most people, famous for beating up Rihanna,
right? For you to do a song with lines like “I find another girl/ Who knows just what I need/ She knows just what I mean/ When I tell her keep it drama free” is unwise. For you to have that line AND a vehicular Ike and Tina reference (seriously, that actually happens. At 3:30) is suicide. But then to do both of those things over a Rihanna sample? Holy shit Chris! You need to start firing your people NOW

Getting Schooled

I DJ'd a San Diego State party at Sig Ep this weekend and it was off the charts to say the least. Guys were frothing waiting for the buses full of lingerie clad co-eds to arrive. A few hundred of them to be exact. Zion I from the Bay headlined and Static Promenade played along side as well. Did I mention that every room in this house has a stripper pole?

*****

Sea Rocket Bistro FAIL

"Sea Rocket Bistro serves a menu of truly local flavor, using ingredients sourced directly from farmers, fishermen, and ranchers in San Diego and focusing on sustainably harvested seafood"
Love the concept of this restaurant but it did not live of to the excitement I had about dining there. I first entered the place and got a hello from the bartender. After that the 2 servers passed me a hand full of times before I stopped one and asked if we could get a table. She told me it depended on if I have a reservation or not. I said yes I do and told her my name. She said to the other servers "oh yeah the reservation for Mr. extremely late is here." I had a 7:15 reservation which I had changed to 8:00 using Open Table. This rubbed me the wrong way after being in the restaurant business for the past 15 years. The attitude and the lack of knowing how to use Open Table and giving me attitude for daring to show up late to a restaurant that had plenty of open tables available made me think poorly about this spot from the start. I informed our server, thank god not the one with the attitude, that we had changed our reservation and she seemed to know what I was talking about, and she was thankful that I had clarified. They must have been discussing how rude it was to be so late. I can relate being in the business but if they took the time to take advantage and learn how the expensive piece of equipment, that prevents them for having to answer phones all night, they might have known about my reservation change. I got past that and ordered some drinks. I got a flight of beers and my girlfriend got a glass of wine. We started with some sea urchin soup served in the urchin and some pickled fresh beets. The soup was ok and the beets tasted just like dirt. I kind of liked that and and truly knew that they were local and organic. I ordered the burger topped with goat cheese and grilled onions with some wheat type grain in the form of a salad. It lacked a lot of taste and left me with more to be desired. The bread it came on was slightly stale.  My girlfriend got the catch of the day and after a few seconds of the server trying to figure out what the catch was we finally came to the conclusion that it "may" be Halibut. This came over a squash puree that we later found out was mixed with some potato. I came to the conclusion that it was mostly potato. It was so good though that it didn't matter. The fish was extremely overcooked, dry and lacked flavor. This place, even with it's concept, could use some seasoning or some sort of flavor. Maybe a pinch of salt? The coconut cupcake I got for dessert was out of this world. I had purchased some Discover SD insider groupon type gift certificates. Two of them to be exact. It said buy more than one and bring your friends directly on the voucher. I had bought 2 and brought my girlfriend so we could enjoy a nice dinner. We buy these frequently and have never had a problem in the past. We eat out at new restaurants at least once a week. We then ordered dessert to go in order to use the whole voucher. Then came time to pay so I broke out the vouchers and a minute later  was informed buy the bartender that they messed up in printing and we could only use one at a time. To add insult to injury, we could only use $25 worth of our voucher to a restaurant that I know I will never visit again, and now have a $55 balance to pay. I was so over the place at this time. I even left the poor server a $20 tip for the embarrassment she had to endure. I give every restaurant and every server the benefit of the doubt when dining out. I understand things can go wrong and people can be having a bad night. This was just wrong from start to finish. The decor is neat and our server was lovely but everything else was sub par. I wish this place the best of luck but will not be recommending this place to others when they ask about our visit. If anyone would like out $25 voucher just email me and you can have it for FREE.

Things Looking Up for T.I.

T.I. has some serious restrictions when released from jail 11 months from now. Court papers obtained outline the year long supervised probation. He won't be able to leave the Northern half of Georgia without a really good excuse. Basically a good work reason that involves a job and getting paid. If he is allowed he cant leave for more than 7 days a month and certainly not in a row. As far as Firearms, forget it. Odds for his next parole violation are 2 to 1 in Vegas. May have to break the bank on this one.

Hurricane Nicole Hits Baltimore

This is a video I took outside my mothers home when Hurricane Nicole crushed Baltimore. I was in town for my brothers wedding when the storm entered baltimore early thursday morning. We were blessed with amazing weather all weekend after harsh rains that closed area schools and soaked everything in the way subsided. The weekend was capped off with a huge divisional win against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field. I hopped on a plane fresh off tasting every beer the airport bar had and slept the entire five hour flight home. Welcome to the Family!!!

Autralian Surfers Honor Andy Irons Passing

On Saturday morning over 1,000 people paddled out at Rainbow Bay on Australia's Gold Coast in honor of the late Andy Irons. In a fitting tribute, what was supposed to be a day of torrential rain, dawned without a cloud in the sky. Those who gathered to celebrate Irons' life were greeted with warm sunshine symbolizing the colorful life he lived.
Andy MorrisSurfers form a cirlce in Rainbow Bay as part of the memorial.
His best mate, Joel Parkinson, left the beach first, followed closely by Mark Occhilupo, Luke Egan, and Iron's long-time shaper, Jason Stevenson. They paddled across the waves peeling down Snapper point, and made it out to the channel surrounding the break Irons had carved so many times.
Andy MorrisFriends in Australia say good-bye to A.I. one last time.
On Tuesday, November 2nd, Irons was found dead in a Dallas hotel room. He had been suffering from an illness at the Rip Curl Pro Search in Puerto Rico and was en route to his home in Hawaii. He checked into the room during a layover.
There were people of all ages making their way out to join the circle. Everyone was encouraged to take a flower as they left for the sea. Many held them in their mouths. One by one, the circle increased to the size of a football field.
Parko, Occy, Luke and Stevenson, floating in the middle of the circle started the goodbye. After a minute's silence, Parko leapt out of the water thrusting his arms into the air. He let out an almighty roar signaling to everyone linking arms. It was time to say goodbye. There was water slapping, arms flying, flowers hurled, and words shouted. A handful of people paddled up to the bouquet for some final words and one last touch of the superstar. The lonely bouquet was then left to drift out to sea covered in a Hawaiian flag.

On the way in, the crowd paddled into a few at Snapper, which had also turned on -- probably for A.I.

Down in Mexico

It's been a while since I have taken the risky road past Tijuana to my beloved former second home of Baja. After almost a year off I decided along with a few friends to take a little weekend trip down to Las Gaviotas. It's a small gated community just south or Rosarito. It's right on the ocean and has it's own private beach, enormous swimming pool, event hall, shuffle board and tennis courts. For $160 a night we had a very nice 4 bedroom house with an ocean view and 2 car garage. Although we didn't score any sizable waves we drank plenty of tequila, speared some fish, ate like royalty and made it back to the U.S. in one piece. It was also my girlfriends first of hopefully many visits past the cartel stricken TJ and down to the land of cheap women and empty waves.

No Reservations Baltimore

This video is old but I really like it. Takes two people from two of my favorite shows and sends them on a journey. One of them being from my hometown of Baltimore. They are very different but seem to have some on screen chemistry. Maybe it's the social outcast role they each play. Anthony Bourdain and Snoop Pearson from "The Wire."

A Dish I Made With Local Ingredients

I cook decent food but I don't usually boast about meals I make.
This is however one of the better meals I have ever made.
Pan seared local scallops and prawns with confetti rice. Sauteed local baby squash topped with a tequila lime and white wine sauce. Garnished with fresh cilantro.
